Traditions Crockett .32 caliber percussion rifle. Traditions Company needs commended in offering a small caliber rifle that is in a true rifle configuration. In the past if you wished to own a small caliber muzzleloader then you were forced to buy a rifle with the overall size that was suited for a ten year old. Traditions Company finally realized that a rifle with a small bore does not have to be a small rifle. The Traditions Crockett rifle has a long slender 31" barrel with an extended half stock forearm that gives the rifle not only an excellent balance, but an appearance that closely resembles a true frontier squirrel rifle. The triggers are double-set adjustable to provide the optimum of accuracy. The barrel is brightly blued with traditional fixed sights. The only wear to the blue finish of the barrel is the top of the rear sight which shows bright metal on the edges. The stock is free of scratches and dings and if it were not for the fact that Traditions Company applies their urethane finish on top of the brass stock mountings it would pass for a new rifle. The urethane which does not attach well to brass has worn in places on the brass allowing it to tarnish.

At a price of over two-hundred dollars this is obviously not a toy for children, this is a for real, firing cannon in .69 caliber. So if it is not for children to play with who would buy it? I am going to betray the masculine gender by admitting to what we have been accused of since we started shaving, and that is the only difference between men and boys is the price of our toys. We sell quite a few of these, not so miniature cannons, and of course few will admit that it is for their entertainment, but I am sure that is the purpose of the buyer. So if you want one of these just say it is for the mantle piece and only us guys will know the truth. This replica of a naval gun measures 15 inches oval all with a gun tube of 12 1/2", and stands 5 1/2" high. It is designed to shoot a lead ball, but in truth, you can load it with just about anything, just be sure to use black powder as the propellant.

1861 Springfield Musket, 58 caliber. Did you ever wonder why the 1861 Springfield musket has the unusual hammer design? It is proof that mistakes are hard to remove. The model 1855 Springfield had, just under the hammer, a snail shaped door that housed a roll of caps much like the type we used in our cap pistols as children. The idea, which worked in theory but not in practice, was that the process of placing the musket cap by hand could be done away with making the soldier's job a little easier under fire. The only problem is that it didn't work in battle conditions. The improved model 1861 musket did away with the small tape primer door, but due to cost, kept the design otherwise. Or, to put it another way the 1861 model Springfield was an improved model. Many a lucky Confederate soldier replaced his outdated European smoothbore musket with the model 1861 when his Union counterpart leaving for the Golden Gate, no longer needed his issued 1861 Springfield.
