The .45 caliber bore shows dark from many year of shooting black rifle powder and mercuric percussion caps. Measuring twenty-eight inches in length, with a one and one-eights across the flats, this barrel heavy rifle demonstrates what our forefathers were made of. The furniture of this rifle is a combination; some brass, German silver, and pewter. The nose cap is pewter. Winchester model 1886 (Mfg. 1887) .45-70 Rifle. The serial number 45XX shows the date of manufacture to be 1887. The color case finish insures that this is an early production Winchester model 1886. The caliber .45-70 Government continues the desirability of this large frame Winchester. The octagon barrel measures twenty-six inches. The Walnut stock has aged nicely with much of the red hue common to Winchester rifles of this time period still showing. The bore is well preserved as well with a crisp action showing little use. The front portion of the barrel shows areas of medium pitting which are not found on the remaining areas of the rifle. The color case finish is well represented on the nose cap, with the buttplate showing brown patina.
